Our 2026 250 Shootout is all wrapped up. This year we concentrated on the 250 off-road bikes–actually the 250 closed-course cross country racers.  The Honda CRF250RX, Kawasaki KX250X, KTM 250XC-F, Triumph TF250-C and Yamaha YZ250FX are all very closely related to the motocross bikes. In fact, the manufacturers only change a handful  of items to rebrand these bikes as off-road racers. Below, there’s a comparison of the features that might or might not be different depending on the brand.

The gearboxes are a very big deal to change, but for racing, it’s never been a clear-cut advantage to have a wide-ratio six-speed. It simply depends where you go riding or racing. To give you an idea of how different the gearboxes are, we did the match to show theoretical speed in gears. This isn’t observed speed (it’s unlikely that any of them can reach redline in top gear), but it does illustrate the gaps between gear ratios.

Comparative gear ratios

We also weigh each bike with the fuel tank drained. On a side note, we always have some rocket scientist asking why we drain the fuel out– “You can’t ride them without gas!”

It’s a little painful to explain something that should be obvious. We want to be able to compare the motorcycles with the variables removed. Otherwise, you learn nothing.

If that’s enough numbers for you, we understand. Next week the video will be out with our thoughts on each bike. The full test will appear in the May 2026 print edition of Dirt Bike.

See you next time!
